During the global pandemic, our team explored\u00a0affordable social housing<\/strong>, addressing the challenge of separating\u00a0private<\/strong>and\u00a0public spaces<\/strong>\u00a0while allowing them to\u00a0coexist<\/strong>. Recognizing the importance of\u00a0personal space<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0psychological health<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0community cohesion<\/strong>, we turned to\u00a0nature<\/strong>, inspired by the\u00a0cocoon<\/strong>\u00a0as a universal life cell. The project uses\u00a0residential capsules<\/strong>\u00a0in three types:\u00a0individual, shared, and public<\/strong>. Suspended from a\u00a0steel beam structure<\/strong>\u00a0like cocoons on a branch, the capsules are\u00a0flexible, transformable, and swappable<\/strong>, extending existing housing. For example, in the\u00a0Balfron Tower<\/strong>, capsules fill empty space between building sections,\u00a0increasing living areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main\u00a0capsule material<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0biodegradable leather<\/strong>, made from common\u00a0biopolymers<\/strong>:\u00a0cellulose, chitosan, and pectin<\/strong>, which can be sourced from\u00a0plants, recycled tree branches, shrimp shells, or fruits<\/strong>. It has\u00a0two layers<\/strong>: the\u00a0top coat<\/strong>\u00a0of chitosan and cellulose, and the\u00a0bottom layer<\/strong>\u00a0of chitosan and apple pectin. The\u00a0programmable, recyclable material<\/strong>\u00a0allows\u00a03D printing<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0capsules<\/strong>\u00a0with variable\u00a0stiffness, strength, color, and transparency<\/strong>. The\u00a0biodegradable skin<\/strong>, stretched over the\u00a0skeleton<\/strong>, acts as a\u00a0filter for the environment<\/strong>\u00a0and provides\u00a0comfortable living<\/strong>\u00a0for residents. After use, it\u00a0disintegrates in water to nourish new life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urban Cocoon:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are\u00a0three types of capsules<\/strong>\u00a0with different\u00a0dimensions and functions<\/strong>:\u00a0individual, shared, and public<\/strong>. The\u00a0capsules<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0suspended from a steel beam structure<\/strong>\u00a0like\u00a0cocoons from a tree branch<\/strong>\u00a0and are\u00a0easy to transform, twist, and swap<\/strong>, acting as\u00a0extensions to any existing housing developments<\/strong>. The main\u00a0capsule material<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0biodegradable leather<\/strong>, obtained from the most common\u00a0biopolymers<\/strong>\u00a0on Earth:\u00a0cellulose, chitosan, and pectin<\/strong>.\u00a0Biodegradable leather<\/strong>\u00a0consists of\u00a0two layers<\/strong>: the\u00a0top coat<\/strong>\u00a0of chitosan and cellulose and the\u00a0bottom layer<\/strong>\u00a0of chitosan and apple pectin. All these\u00a0materials are programmable<\/strong>,\u00a0fully recyclable<\/strong>, and are the exact opposite of\u00a0plastic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the materials:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0design<\/strong>\u00a0of each\u00a0capsule<\/strong>\u00a0is based on the\u00a0bionic skeleton<\/strong>\u00a0of a real\u00a0cocoon<\/strong>, reflecting its\u00a0oblong, soft shape<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0layering<\/strong>. Capsules are\u00a0partially open<\/strong>\u00a0to allow\u00a0maximum natural light<\/strong>, essential for\u00a0residents\u2019 psychological health<\/strong>, with\u00a0glazed sections<\/strong>\u00a0for ventilation and views. The main\u00a0material<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0biodegradable leather<\/strong>, made from\u00a0cellulose, chitosan, and pectin<\/strong>, sourced from\u00a0plants, recycled branches, shrimp shells, or fruits<\/strong>. It has\u00a0two layers<\/strong>\u2014top coat<\/strong>\u00a0of chitosan and cellulose, and\u00a0bottom layer<\/strong>\u00a0of chitosan and apple pectin.
