The future site of\u00a0Tuchkov Buyan Park<\/strong>\u00a0was once a small picturesque island on the Neva, later used for warehouses and the Institute of Applied Chemistry. Today it is an empty plot in the historic center of St. Petersburg, hidden for decades behind a fence. The project offers a unique opportunity to create a new public space just steps away from the city\u2019s main landmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the park, residents and visitors will enjoy fresh views of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Exchange, and the Neva embankments. Beyond being a park, it will integrate underground spaces to accommodate modern infrastructure and multifunctional public flows, reflecting a contemporary approach to urban development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a02020<\/strong>, the\u00a0competition for the park in the city center<\/strong>\u00a0was announced. An important role in selecting the site for design was played by both its\u00a0historical significance<\/strong>\u00a0and its\u00a0location<\/strong>, as the territory forms part of the city\u2019s\u00a0\u201cgreen corridor.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Tuchkov Buyan Park<\/strong>\u00a0was chosen for its potential. The\u00a0surrounding infrastructure<\/strong>\u00a0is expected to be\u00a0well developed in the near future<\/strong>, and although the site is currently empty, it already holds strong potential to become an\u00a0attractive place for both tourists and citizens.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain Garden:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 20th century, the area was divided into two islands –\u00a0Tuchkov Buyan<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Vatniy Island<\/strong>. The newly created artificial island was therefore named\u00a0Vatniy Island<\/strong>\u00a0to remind citizens of its history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The park will include sustainable features such as\u00a0\u201celectronic trees\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0that filter rainwater into a reservoir for irrigation and fountains. In addition, a\u00a0rain garden<\/strong>\u00a0will collect stormwater from roofs and streets, allowing it to infiltrate the soil. Planted with grasses and perennials, it is a cost-effective solution to reduce runoff and a vital part of the city\u2019s sustainable development program.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vatniy Island:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artificial island, named after the historic\u00a0Vatniy Island<\/strong>\u00a0that once existed in this area, highlights the site\u2019s connection to its past. It is surrounded by a shallow\u00a030-cm-deep \u201criver,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0designed to be safe for children to play and explore. In addition to this playful landscape, the island will include\u00a0pavilions<\/strong>\u00a0that provide spaces for recreation, gatherings, and cultural events, making it both a reminder of history and a vibrant part of the new park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Underground:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0underground recreational space<\/strong>\u00a0consists of\u00a0two levels<\/strong>, each covering an area of\u00a048,000 sq. m<\/strong>. It is designed with a\u00a0bionic, translucent roof<\/strong>\u00a0made of\u00a0ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene)<\/strong>, a modern polymer that combines the benefits of polyethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene. ETFE is several times lighter than glass, provides excellent thermal insulation, looks aesthetically pleasing, and can be adapted for\u00a0solar energy collection<\/strong>. Beneath the roof lies a central\u00a0greenhouse<\/strong>, with a\u00a0conference hall, library, and exhibition spaces<\/strong>, forming an event- and education-oriented program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The underground structure is conceived as a single open space supported by columns, with two levels at\u00a0\u20133.000 and \u20136.000 meters<\/strong>, connected by ramps spaced 12 meters apart. The greenhouse ramp under the glass dome serves as the main vertical link. From the main entrance, visitors can descend under the landscaped surface into the\u00a0library<\/strong>, which opens directly into the\u00a0exhibition areas<\/strong>. Additional facilities include a\u00a0multifunctional hall, co-working spaces, yoga and workshop rooms, art galleries, and multimedia laboratories<\/strong>, creating a vibrant cultural and educational hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future park, with\u00a0direct access to the water<\/strong>, will become a crucial node in the city\u2019s green network, connecting\u00a0Petrovsky and Alexandrovsky Parks<\/strong>\u00a0and nearby small squares, while creating new\u00a0pedestrian and bicycle routes<\/strong>.
